Yo Mom! He wants to run the gnar. The paddling experts at Tumalo Creek are here to get him there in a fun and safe environment.
We'll start off nice and slow with sessions in our outdoor pool where kids will have the chance to learn the basics of the kayak roll. Some might even nail it right away - kids have a way of doing that, don't they?
After everyone is feeling snug in their kid's sized kayaks, we'll take to the river and practice our strokes and learn about currents in the gentle moving stretch of the Deschutes by the Old Mill. And then it's time for a field trip! We'll head up to Elk Lake and play all day in one of Central Oregon's most picturesque alpine lakes. If the group feels ready, we'll spend the last day of camp out on a river with some real whitewater and get the kids comfortable running easy Class II rapids.
Sound like too much fun to miss? Tumalo Creek will sometimes bring parental chaperones with river certifications and safety skills.
Details:
Meet at Tumalo Creek every morning at 9 a.m. and be back at 4 p.m. to retrive your happy paddlers. We ask that you come at 8 a.m. on Thursday to give us time to make it out to our great river adventure. We are usually back by 5 p.m. on Thursday, but the instructors will communicate with the staff at the shop for an exact arrival time sometime that afternoon.
Kids should bring their own lunch and lots of healthy, high-energy snacks.
Please dress your child in quick-drying clothes. Surf-type clothing is ideal, like board shorts and a rash guard. They will be getting wet and exposed to the sun and wind throughout the day. Please also pack them a change of clothes and a fleece and towel. Tumalo Creek stocks plenty of appropriate gear in the retail section of our store.
Skills:
Kids will learn how to control their boat in the current and to maneuver from one part of the river to another. By the end of the week, they should feel comfortable moving in and out of eddies, paddling through small waves and ferrying across the river.
Ages:
8 - 16
One of our instructors, Steven Gleason, made a wonderful video of photographs from the kid's camps last summer. Check it out!
