Learn to Whitewater Kayak
Full Immersion Whitewater Kayaking Weekend:
Wanted: Thrill-seeker, risk-taker, adventurer, adrenalin-junkie, outdoor lover, river runner, fire builder, story-teller, always ready to rally.
About me: I’m whitewater kayaking. I’m the sport of your dreams.
Here at Tumalo Creek, it’s no secret that we want to help create life-long paddlers; boaters who consider kayaking part of who they are, not what they do. But we also know this doesn’t happen overnight.
If you are looking for a challenge with big-time rewards, whitewater kayaking offers both in healthy doses. It takes some dedication, but most boaters would agree it’s well worth the effort.
Sign up for Tumalo Creek’s Full Immersion Whitewater Weekend, and you’ll experience a complete introduction to the sport in just two and a half days. Our expert instructors will keep you safe out on the river, while gently prodding you outside of your comfort zone, and you’ll run a Class II+ rapid by the end of the weekend.
The course begins Friday evening at 5 p.m. in the pool behind the shop, where you will learn basic stroke techniques and get an introduction to the roll. (During colder months the pool session might be during the week at Juniper.) We’ll spend Saturday practicing our skills in the gentle rapids by the Healey Bridge on the Deschutes, and Sunday, we’ll run a longer stretch of the McKenzie or another nearby Class II river.
We’ll provide all kayak gear, but please dress to get wet. We recommend warm, quick-drying underlayers, with dry tops or dry suits or wet suits. (We have dry suits or wet suits you can borrow.) Even in warmer weather, dry tops are recommended as the temperature of the river can cause a temporary chill. Also bring plenty of high-energy food, including lunch, and a thermos of tea if it is a cold day. Pack a change of clothes for the end of the day, plus a towel and a fleece.
Give us a call if you have questions, and click the BOOK NOW button above to reserve your spot. The schedule is also available on our events calendar.
