Join us in our outdoor classroom as we introduce and practice the skills that every new paddler needs to explore the waterways of Central Oregon. The class begins with an hour-long session on the back lawn, where we discuss appropriate kayaking gear, our favorite paddling destinations and ways to be safe while out on the water. Check out the video below to get a better idea of what the class entails.
We will then get geared up for three hours out on the beautiful Deschutes River. After learning to launch your boat from the small dock behind the shop, you will learn how your boat, body and paddle blade work together to create the most efficient strokes. Practice skills like the sweep stroke, where your paddle will arch in a C-shape around your boat, moving it in one direction or another, and the stern draw which uses the paddle as a rudder at the back of the boat.
At the end of class you will learn and practice a wet exit with an assisted re-entry, while putting other safety and rescue skills to the test. You will leave the Basic Skills Kayak class with the technique and confidence to start exploring and enjoying the incredible waterways in Central Oregon's backyard.
Depending on the weather, you will need:
-sneakers or river shoes, with wool socks or wetsuit booties
-sunglasses with Croakies or Chums
-sunscreen and lip balm
-sun hat, rain hat or fleece hat
-synthetic top and bottom (i.e. thermal underwear)
-raincoat and rain pants
-swimsuit
-water bottle
-towel and change of clothes for after class
