On June 26, 2013, Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe will host live music and boat demos on the back lawn behind the store, on the banks of the Deschutes River. From 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Tumalo Creek’s fleet of 50 demo boats will be available to try with plenty of paddling experts on hand to answer any questions and get boaters comfortably out on the water. Admission is $5 and children 12 and under are free. This event is part of the Subaru of Bend Outside Games.
The music starts at 5 p.m. with Bend singer-songwriter Laurel Brauns warming up the crowd. Oregon's fiestiest bluegrass band, The Pitchfork Revolution, will get the whole family dancing as the sunsets over the mountains in the distance from 7 - 9 p.m.
During this month's Pickin' & Paddlin', we'll also be hosting the 4th Annual Deschutes Wooden Boat Gathering on the backlawn from 4 - 6 p.m. Builders will have the opportunity to meet other builders, talk shop, and swap tips and techniques. If you own a wooden kayak, canoe or SUP bring it down and show off your craft. This is also a great even for those thinking of building a floating wooden object.
Pickin' & Paddlin' raises money for the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance, a local organization who has been working for nearly a decade to transform the Colorado Dam into a whitewater playpark. This fall, Bend Parks & Rec Bond Measure 9-86 was passed by the residents of Bend: this Bond will fund most of the reconstruction of the dam into a safe passage for tubers and floaters. But the work is not over yet: The BPTA must now raise $900,000 to build the whitewater features that will complete the park, and they need your help. The whitewater park will become an invaluable amentity which will be enjoyed for generations to come, and is predicted to bring in millions of visitor dollars into our economy. Every donation gets us closer to this goal. Thanks for your support!
