Tumalo Creek is offering two four-day camps this summer for youth ages 8 - 16 that will progress through the basics of kayaking. The camp runs from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day (except Thursday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.) and kids bring their own lunch and return home at night. All kayaking gear is included and the camp meets at Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe each morning.
The first day of camp will be spent on the Cascade Lakes learning basic paddle strokes and playing kayaking games that will help improve paddling skills. Tuesday will be spent learning bracing, self-rescues and rolling techniques in the pool and then we will move onto sections of the river in Bend for the afternoon. Wednesday we'll refine all the skills learned throughout the week so we can get ready to head out on the river. Thursday we will take our boats down a beautiful stretch of Class 1 and Class 2 rapids to try out all our new skills. During our time on the river, kids will learn how to control their boat in the current and to maneuver from one part of the river to another. Skills include moving in and out of eddies, surfing waves and ferrying across the river. We will spend the final day of camp out on the McKenzie bringing all our skills together and enjoying one of the most beautiful stretches of river in Central Oregon.
One of our instructors, Steven Gleason, made a wonderful video of photographs from the kid's camps last summer. Check it out!
